چکیده

The most pervasive patterns in biogeography are those related to latitude. In particular, the most conspicuous of these patterns, such as latitudinal gradients in species richness and geographic range size, have been extensively studied and documented (Gaston, 2003; Willig et al., 2003; Hillebrand, 2004; Ruggiero & Hawkins, 2006; Mittelbach et al., 2007; Ruggiero & Werenkraut, 2007, for recent reviews). One of the most well-known latitudinal patterns is Rapoport’s rule, which postulates an increase in the geographic range size of a species with increasing latitude (Stevens, 1989; Hawkins & DinizFilho, 2006). From an ecological perspective, Rapoport’s rule can represent a particular case of the more general relationship between the niche breadth of a species and the size of its geographic Mitrani Department of Desert Ecology, Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, BenGurion University of the Negev, Sede-Boqer Campus, 84990 Midreshet Ben-Gurion, Israel, Ramon Science Center, PO Box 194, Mizpe Ramon 80600, Israel, Desert Animal Adaptations and Husbandry, Wyler Department of Dryland Agriculture, Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, BenGurion University of the Negev, Sede-Boqer Campus, 84990 Midreshet Ben-Gurion, Israel, UMR CNRS-UMII 5119 Ecosystemes Lagunaires, University of Montpellier II, CC093, FR-34095 Montpellier Cedex 5, France and Department of Zoology, University of Otago, PO Box 56, Dunedin 9054, New Zealand

Latitudinal gradients in biotic niche breadth vary across ecosystem types.

Several properties of food webs-the networks of feeding links between species-are known to vary systematically with the species richness of the underlying community. Under the 'latitude-niche breadth hypothesis', which predicts that species in the tropics will tend to evolve narrower niches, one might expect that these scaling relationships could also be affected by latitude. To test this hypot...

The Altitudinal Niche-breadth Hypothesis in Insect-plant Interactions

Studies aiming at explaining specialization along latitudinal gradients of plant-herbivore interactions have, to date, yielded inconclusive results. Here we propose the use of steep altitudinal gradients for dissecting factors driving evolution of polyphagy in insect herbivores. First, we test whether colonization of high elevation environment favours increased niche-breadth in two disparate in...

Host specificity and geographic range in haematophagous ectoparasites

A negative interspecific correlation between the degree of habitat specialization and the size of a species’ geographic range has been documented for several free living groups of organisms, providing support for the niche breadth hypothesis. In contrast, practically nothing is known about the geographic range sizes of parasitic organisms and their determinants. In the context of the niche brea...

Habitat width along a latitudinal gradient

We use the Chowdhury ecosystem model, one of the most complex agent-based ecological models, to test the latitude-niche breadth hypothesis, with regard to habitat width, i.e., whether tropical species generally have narrower habitats than high latitude ones. Application of the model has given realistic results in previous studies on latitudinal gradients in species diversity and Rapoport's rule...

The latitudinal gradient in niche breadth: concepts and evidence.

We examine Robert MacArthur's hypothesis that niche breadth is positively associated with latitude (the latitude-niche breadth hypothesis). This idea has been influential and long standing, yet no studies have evaluated its generality or the validity of its assumptions. We review the theoretical arguments suggesting a positive relationship between niche breadth and latitude. We also use availab...
